UK Wired Network Upgrade
As part of Information Technology Service's (ITS) ongoing efforts to modernize the University’s enterprise network infrastructure, upgrades to Ethernet switches beginning July 1, 2025, will no longer support 10 Mbps (10BASE-T) connections. These upgrades affect the switch ports used by most devices on the enterprise network, including computers, printers, and devices that rely on wired network connections. This change is necessary to align with current network standards and support higher-speed connectivity across campus.

- How do I know if my device is affected?
Verify your device’s network interface settings to determine its operating speed and duplex configuration. This information can be found in the device's user manual or on the manufacturer's website. Devices limited to 10 Mbps will be affected. - What should I do if my device only supports 10 Mbps?
ITS recommends replacing any devices that only support 10 Mbps before the network upgrade in your building. If replacement is not feasible, departments are encouraged to contact ITS at ITSaboutYou@uky.edu to explore potential short-term solutions. These accommodations will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and may require departmental funding. - Will there be any support for 10 Mbps devices after the upgrade?
Support for 10 Mbps devices will not be included in the standard network design. In limited cases, ITS may work with departments to evaluate short-term accommodations. Any such solutions must be requested in advance, reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and may require departmental funding. Unsupported devices that remain unaddressed after the grace period will be disconnected. - What if my device is capable of higher speeds but is currently running at 10 Mbps?
You may need to reconfigure the device’s speed and duplex settings. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, it could be a cabling problem or a device limitation, and you may need to contact ITS or the device manufacturer. - Will ITS notify us before the upgrade is performed in our building?
